Northeastern Illinois University invites professors from partner universities to participate in a virtual Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Workshop, which will take place Wednesday, October 28 8:30-10:30 a.m. (US time: Chicago (GMT-5))
This event is being co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Center for Teaching and Learning as part of this year’s theme, “Teaching and Learning in the Age of Agency.”
About the session:
Four NEIU faculty experienced in COIL (Maria De La Torre, Alejandra Prieto-Mendoza, Cris Toffolo and Isidore Udoh) will lead this virtual event to explain how to collaborate with a colleague in another country in order to bring students together to learn from one another.
In the first hour a PowerPoint presentation will cover very practical issues such as:
● getting started – how to begin to collaborate with a faculty member at another university
● choice of technology
● protecting students’ privacy
● etiquette issues and other best practices
● different ways to use COIL (i.e., synchronously, asynchronously, for just one joint reading or for a whole course, etc.)
In the second hour faculty will move into breakout rooms where faculty in similar disciplines but at different universities will be able to discuss ideas in very small groups, with the goal of finding a faculty member with whom to collaborate in the coming year.
