Doctoral programme in management and economics

Doctoral Programme in English as a Means of Strengthening SGH’s Position Within the Framework of the European Area of Higher Education and the European Area of Research and Innovation
The project is implemented under the Operational Programme Human Capital - Priority IV „Tertiary education and science”, 4.1. Strengthening and development of didactic potential of universities and increasing the number of graduates from faculties of key importance for knowledge-based economy, Sub-measure 4.1.1 „Strengthening and development of didactic potential of universities”.
The project, funded from the European Social Fund in the amount of nearly 5 million PLN, came as the second among more than two hundred applications for funding prepared by universities from all across the country, in the grant competition organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The project aims to prepare and implement the first edition of the doctoral programme taught entirely in English within the Collegium of World Economy. This will expand the range of the Warsaw School of Economics’ offer dedicated to both Polish and foreign students. As a result it will contribute to the further strengthening of the international position of the University.
Particular emphasis in the implementation of the project was placed on developing solutions that were aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the educational process at the doctoral level. As such one of the primary objectives was assuring that a high ratio of doctoral students successfully defends their dissertations. Specific solutions have been introduced based on the experience of both, the Warsaw School of Economics and best practices gleaned from other European universities. The highlights of the newly developed doctoral programme are:
  • dissertations are prepared in English, and will be reviewed by Polish and foreign professors,
  • in the curriculum, the greatest emphasis is put on subjects forming scientific research skills and teaching methodologies for the preparation of the dissertation,
  • a significant number of lectures is conducted by foreign visiting professors from the partner universities of the Warsaw School of Economics,
  • in working on their dissertations students will be guided and supported not only by their individual academic supervisors, but also by other scholars through participation in a series of seminars under one of the three available specializations,
  • special textbooks in English were prepared for subjects taught within the programme.
The doctoral programme was launched in September 2010 and will be running until the end of June 2014. There were a total of 50 slots within the full-time and part-time groups. Participation in both forms of the programme is free of charge. In addition, full-time doctoral students receive a scholarship.
